With all of the wonderful places in Albuquerque to do a wedding ceremony a question that pops up is Why Old Town? Aside from being the historic heart of the city, there are a few other reasons.
Atmosphere- Nothing says New Mexico more than the Old Town Plaza area. The combination of architecture, the history of the development of an area, as well as the Mercado aspect gives old town a festive and happy feeling.
Diversity- there are lots of places where a ceremony can be done that have a unique feeling all there own, just a few of these are:
1. The Wishing Well – just off the plaza and behind the La Placita restaurant the wishing well is super for a small intimate ceremony. The proprietors of the shops in this little plaza support an abundance of potted plants and flowers, so it is like a little piece of a secret garden. Along with the sound of running water, an occasional musician this is a neat place to do a wedding.
2. The museum of Albuquerque statuary garden. Within walking distance of the plaza the statuary has half a dozen statues in as many styles; from classic to abstract this garden is quite and fairly private. Open 8-5 the statuary garden is free to the public.
3. Side Plazas- From Plaza Escondido to Garduno’s Plaza old town has half a dozen or more unique smaller plazas that at one time were utilized as family and public gathering areas for haciendas, shops, schools and private chapels. Today these side plazas host a variety of shops, restaurants out of the hustle and bustle of the main plaza.
4. Tiguex Park – If trees and grass are your thing Tiguex (aka Tricentennial Park) has acres of open space. A ceremony under the limbs of a huge cottonwood tree, or on a knoll of grass surrounded by friends and family can be just the ticket.
5. The Old Town Gazebo – The center piece of the Old Town Plaza, the Gazebo is available for both informal and formal ceremonies. We have married hundreds and hundreds of couples in the Gazebo, it is one of our favorite places in all of New Mexico.
